Green Buildings and Sustainability Seminar at Ajman University

College of Engineering at Ajman University of Science and Technology held a seminar and dialogue on sustainability. The seminar was aptly titled “The impact of Green Buildings on Sustainability” and was presented by Mr. Subhi Qahawish, he is an expert architect in Green Architecture with long experience in Canada, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Palestine.

He explained in his presentation the basic principles of green architecture, with examples from contemporary projects, such as “The Sustainable City” in Dubai and the roots of sustainability in traditional architectural heritage, with explanation for the basic principles of the wind catchers (Al Barajeel) in the Gulf region. He also emphasized the importance of building envelope in maintaining comfortable environment inside the building. Being bilingual, his presentation as enjoyed by all attending the event hosted by the department of architectural engineering.

He also proposed cost effective means of building sustainable building at a much cheaper cost than normal ones by implementing some basic principles of sustainability. After the presentation, Mr. Qahawish responded to questions by students as well as by faculty and there was a very useful discussion about the essential need for sustainable buildings.
