The Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) degree in Biomedical Engineering started in 1995 under the College of Engineering at Ajman University. The program was accredited with “accreditation eligible” status in the academic year 2000-01 by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE. The program was approved by the CAA with the status “full accreditation” from the academic year 2006-07. The last re-accreditation of the program was in 2011.
The current biomedical engineering program is comprised of 141 credit hours.
The Department aims to be internationally recognized as one of the leading centers for Biomedical Engineering in the Arab world in terms of cutting-edge learning, impactful research and responsible outreach and community engagement.
The mission of the biomedical engineering department is to bridge the gap between conventional engineering and life sciences through graduates who are equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for pursuing successful professional career in the healthcare industry.
Biomedical engineering graduates are:
(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
(g) an ability to communicate effectively
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
(l) broad knowledge in the field of biomedical engineering.
Admission to the BME program requires a UAE Secondary School Certificate (science major) or its equivalent with a minimum of 70% and a minimum TOEFL score of 500 or its equivalent in other standardized English language tests.
The currents requirements are considered sufficient. Students are able to successfully complete the program and graduate in the recommended time-frame.
Students with a TOEFL score of less than 500 or equivalent are admitted conditionally and enrolled in an Intensive English language Program (IEP) in order to achieve the score. Such students are not allowed to register for their specialization courses until they achieve the required TOEFL score (or equivalent).
Other details and related regulations for admission and registration of students are published in the University Catalog.
