Ajman University Students Experience Student Exchange Program in South Korea

In order to broaden its educational horizons Ajman University of Science & Technology,  implemented a student exchange program with Sookmyung Women’s University, based on Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) which the two had signed earlier in 2015. In its 28 years of educational excellence, Ajman University has always set students as priority so that they can reap the benefits of its accomplishments both academically and professionally.

Founded in 1906, Sookmyung is Korea’s first royal private educational institution for women. Over the 107 years of history of educating women leaders, it has accumulated invaluable educational experience, research capabilities and community service experience. Today, it has 100,000 alumni and 13,000 currently enrolled students.

The MoU reflects the University’s commitment to excellence through education and it endorses in addition to exchange of faculty and students, the organization of joint conferences, seminars, workshops, exchange of researches, research results and exchange of academic literature amongst other avenues of cooperation; paving a new path for the students and generations of knowledge seekers in both countries.

Ten female students of Ajman University undertook this program under the supervision of Dr. Chuloh Jung, Associate Professor of Architecture, Ms. Raghad Mourad, Lecturer at the College of Engineering. This visit also included educational trips to some of the key sources of inspiration and expertise. The students visited Gansam Architects & Partners which ranks number 27 in world’s 100 biggest practices in architecture along with SKM Architect that are high-end mid-size architectural firm in South Korea and students were fascinated by their works and their design approach to the nature.

They also had a unique opportunity to meet Moon Hoon who is a very well-known architect/artist with a unique approach. His sketches were purchased by M.O.M.A. New York this year.  Also on the list of places visited was the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art is a museum in Seoul, South Korea, run by the Samsung Foundation of Culture and the Samsung Town which is a major office park in Seocho-gu in Seoul, South Korea. It serves as the IT and electronics hub for the multinational corporation Samsung.

The last but not the least fascinating they visited the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, also called the DDP, is a major urban development landmark in Seoul, South Korea designed by Zaha Hadid,  with a distinctively neofuturistic design characterized by the "powerful, curving forms of elongated structures". The landmark is the centerpiece of South Korea's fashion hub and popular tourist destination, Dongdaemun, featuring a walkable park on its roofs, large global exhibition spaces, futuristic retail stores and restored parts of the Seoul fortress.

The students exchange program was initiate by the department of architecture and will be continued and expanded to joint design studio program, joint design workshop, and joint R&D projects in the future.
